When someone refers to a “silk tree,” they generally mean one of two things. They either mean the actual silk tree that was originally cultivated in Mesopotamia (and, incidentally, has nothing to do with the production of silk) or a faux tree with fabric leaves, similar to “silk flowers.”
The silk tree that was originally cultivated in Mesopotamia is now extant in a number varieties – and on a number of continents, including the United States. It is often considered an “invasive” species, as it reseeds quickly, spreading throughout regions quickly.
This “silk tree” gets its namesake from the fabric, even though it isn't used as an ingredient. The flowers of this tree are long and thin – and appear to look like an individual feather fibers or silk strings (from a silk worm's cocoon).
In contrast, the faux “silk tree” is often made out of inexpensive silk or silk-like substitutes, such as nylon. While the actual stem of the “plant” may be made of something natural, such as bamboo, all of the leaves are artificial.
Many of the popular faux tree manufacturers can produce a range of fake trees, as well as flowers, that actually appear to be the real thing, even though they are constructed out of artificial products. The price of these trees varies, but if you're looking for something cheap and low-maintenance to put on your dining room table, you should be able to order something from Silk Flowers for under $40. If you need something larger, you could easily end up spending an extra few hundred dollars.
